I’m John McGarvey and I’m a freelance web copywriter. I’m based in Highgate, north London, so feel free to drop in if you’re passing through.
I call myself a web (or online) copywriter because the internet is my specialism. I can help you spruce up your website copy, sort out underperforming pages and generally make every area of your site earn its money.
I have more than five years’ experience of writing and editing online. Much of it has been for technology companies (including Microsoft and O2), so I’ve got particularly good at explaining complicated technical stuff in simple terms.
I’ve also done lots of writing aimed at small businesses and consumers, so if your site is struggling to reach its audience, give me a call. I’ll inject some life and personality into it before you can say “conversion rates are up”.
Of course, like any competent writer, I can turn my hand to most subjects. In fact, sometimes unfamiliar topics are best, because I can offer a whole new angle. So if you need a feature on picture framing or sushi, let’s talk.
Writing for the web just isn’t the same as writing text that’ll be used in print. For instance, people tend to read differently on screen, scanning text and generally skipping through looking for keywords.
Because I’ve done so much work online, I really get this stuff. I’m not a print writer who’s been forced to move with the times and adapt my style for the internet. I’m a web writer.
What I can help you with
Freelance and contract work is my thing and I can work for you on site or remotely. Here are some examples of what I can do for you:
- New website copy.
- Rewriting the existing text on your site.
- Feature and interview pieces.
- Search engine optimisation work.
- Tweaking online processes, including order forms.
- Writing email newsletters and other messages.
If you think I might be able to help you, just contact me. I love hearing from new people, and a quick chat is often enough to decide if I’m the right person for the job.

I love writing, but plenty of other things float my boat too, like:
- Live music and festivals like Glastonbury and Reading.
- Visiting new places (highlights: Russia and San Francisco).
- Cool t-shirts from sites like Glennz and Threadless.
There aren’t many people who share my name, but if you came here expecting to find someone else, perhaps you’re looking for a Dreamweaver guru, a Professor of Chemistry, or some sort of Bible study expert.
Now that you’ve made it this far down the page, you must want to send me a message. Go on – I promise I’ll reply.
